Vision of Outreach – IIT Jammu

The Outreach Program at IIT Jammu serves as a bridge between the Institute and society, aiming to inspire, inform, and empower students, particularly from underserved, remote, and border regions of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Since 2024, IIT Jammu has hosted over 10,000 school students through routine requests, including students from government and far-flung schools. The program seeks to raise awareness about science, technology, and higher education while fostering curiosity and ambition among students with limited exposure to such opportunities.

Objectives

• To inspire students through exposure to advanced laboratories and real-world applications of science and engineering.

• To enhance learning through hands-on demonstrations and guided lab visits.

• To promote interactive faculty–student engagement for academic guidance and inquiry.

• To provide mentorship for exploring STEM career pathways.

• To encourage peer learning through interaction with IIT Jammu students.

• To ensure inclusive outreach to students from remote and government schools.

• To support the Vigyan Jyoti Scheme for promoting STEM education among meritorious girl students.

Vision of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, envisioned to bring transformational change in rural India through the active participation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The vision of the program is to create a sustainable and inclusive development model by connecting HEIs with nearby villages, enabling the application of knowledge, innovation, and appropriate technologies to address local development challenges.

It seeks to foster a meaningful partnership between academia and rural communities, where students and faculty engage directly with grassroots realities, understand socio-economic issues, and contribute to evidence-based solutions. In alignment with this vision, greater involvement of institutional students and faculty is essential to deeply engage with adopted villages, identify real-world challenges, and develop impactful SEG proposals for funding support from the Ministry. Strengthening such engagement under the UBA network will enhance capacity building, promote experiential learning, and accelerate holistic rural development.
