Underwater Artificial Intelligence Lab

Water covers around 71% of the earth's surface in the form of ocean, sea, and rivers, etc. Human is only able to explore 10% or less of the earth water contents. Study of water ecology for observing the interaction of organism inside the water and their environment is one of the important task. This makes underwater surveillance and signal processing to be of great interest. This needs to capture and analyze underwater data.

At IIT Jammu a unique and first kind of research platform is developed with a size of 25ft x 20ft which is having similar facility of ocean including the waves and artificial noise injection process in ocean. The developed system will be capable for application development like underwater telephony, SONAR Sensor calibration, underwater image processing, real time data capturing & signal sensing. Acoustic signal measurement using Time and frequency domain in the presence of noise (user defined noise like propeller blade, boat hissing Fish ,etc), signal sensing, software acoustic section & post processing codes / algorithm in different parametric environments for acoustic section, acoustic beacon generation over hydrophone array are the major initiatives planned in this platform.

Autonomous, unmanned platforms have a large potential to obtain data about the vast ocean. We seek to realize novel underwater platform systems to reveal the nature of the ocean. These systems will realize wide-area, high-accuracy, and long-term observation through collaboration of multimedia/audio/video/communication platforms such as video transmission link, Underwater robotic arms, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), underwater telephony, SONAR Sensor calibration, underwater image processing, etc. Some of the ongoing projects at IIT Jammu in support from NRB-DRDO, SERB, DST are as follows; under water object detection and tracking, source localization and fish cage farming, autonomous detection and tracking of marine life, and under-sea observation and navigation, etc.
