Description: The Pre-Ph.D. Seminar discussed the doctoral thesis titled Beyond the Binary, Across the Spectrum: A Multimodal Reading of Transgender Indian Narratives that engages with oral, textual, and visual narratives to examine the diverse expressions of transgender identities in India. Positioned within India’s socio-cultural and linguistic contexts, the study interrogates binary gender norms and highlights how marginalized voices articulate resistance and self-definition.

The research explores podcasts, literature, cinema, webcomics, and photo-textual art to trace how questions of gender intersect with caste, class, and region. It underscores the resilience and creativity of transgender individuals in reimagining identity and generating inclusive cultural discourses.

Bringing together perspectives from literature, media, and queer/trans studies, this interdisciplinary work contributes to widening the field of transgender scholarship in India while advocating pathways toward a more equitable and inclusive society.
